How to Play Samba

Rules, Scoring, and Gameplay Guide

Back Home

PlaySambaOnline uses a traditional ruleset for Samba, a Canasta variant played with 3 packs and 6 Jokers (162 card). There are many rule variations - these are ours.

Rules & Flow

Total Draw

Draw 2 cards from the deck at the start of every turn. Discard 1 to end.

Meld Maybe

Meld if you can. Do it early with a partner to construct together, be more secretive in singles play - more below

Discard

Discard one card to end your turn. That's the basic flow draw/meld/discard.

Pick up the Pack

Take the whole discard pile, even if it's frozen, if you have a matching natural pair for the top card. This replaces drawing 2 cards from deck

Steal Top Discard

When the discard pile is not frozen, and the top card matches an existing meld, add it to the meld instead of drawing 2 cards.

Going Out

Empty your hand to go out. Requirement: Your team MUST have completed 2 Canastas/Sambas or 1 of each (2 total).

Going Out

Empty your hand to go out. Requirement: Your team MUST have completed 2 Canastas/Sambas or 1 of each (2 total).

The Winner

The game ends at the completion of a hand, if one or more teams exceed 10,000 points. If both teams pass 10,000, highest wins.

Wilds and Black 3's (Red 3's below)

Wilds 2's & Jokers

Discarding a wild freezes the discard pile. Use up to 2 wilds in a set meld, but never more than naturals.

Black 3's

Discarding a black 3 blocks discard pickup. A set of black 3's, without wilds, can be melded by a player going out that turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick-reference answers for common rules and edge cases

How many cards do you draw each turn?
You must draw 2 cards from the deck at the start of every turn, and discard 1 card to end your turn. Under certain conditions, you can pick up the discard pile instead of drawing.
When can you pick up the discard pile?
You can pick up the entire discard pile if: (1) The pile is frozen, and you have a matching natural pair (excluding wilds) in your hand that matches the top card of the discard pile. (2) The pile is not frozen, and the top card matches any of your team's existing melds on the table, allowing you to add it directly to that meld.
What freezes the discard pile?
Discarding a wild card (a Two or a Joker) instantly freezes the discard pile for all players. When frozen, players can only pick up the pile by using a matching natural pair from their hand with the top card.
What blocks picking up the discard pile?
Discarding a black 3 blocks the next player from picking up the discard pile on their turn. Unlike wild cards, black 3s do not permanently freeze the pile; the block only applies to the immediately following turn.
What are the requirements to go out?
To go out (empty your hand and end the round), your team must have completed at least 2 Canastas/Sambas, or one of each (two total). Additionally, you must be able to meld or discard all remaining cards in your hand.
What is a Samba?
A Samba is a completed sequence of 7 consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 5-6-7-8-9-10-J of Diamonds). No wild cards (Twos or Jokers) are allowed in a Samba. A completed Samba is worth 1,500 bonus points.
What is a Natural Canasta?
A Natural Canasta is a completed set of 7 cards of the identical rank (e.g., seven 8s) containing no wild cards. A completed Natural Canasta is worth 500 bonus points.
What is a Mixed Canasta?
A Mixed Canasta is a completed set of 7 cards of the same rank that includes 1 or 2 wild cards (Twos or Jokers) alongside natural cards. A completed Mixed Canasta is worth 300 bonus points.
What are the initial meld requirements?
To make your team's first meld in a deal, the card point values must meet a minimum threshold based on your team's current total score: Below 0 points requires 15 points; 0 to 1,495 points requires 50 points; 1,500 to 2,995 points requires 90 points; 3,000 to 6,995 points requires 120 points; 7,000+ points requires 150 points. Note that Red Threes do not count toward this initial point requirement.
How does scoring work?
Scoring is calculated at the end of each deal as follows: Positive points are awarded for all melded cards on the table (Joker: 50, Two/Ace: 20, 8-K: 10, 4-7/Black 3: 5), plus meld completion bonuses (Samba: 1,500, Natural Canasta: 500, Mixed Canasta: 300). Red Threes are worth 100 points each (1,000 for all 6) as positive points if your team has at least 2 completed Canastas/Sambas (or one of each); otherwise, they are deducted as a penalty. Card values remaining in hand are deducted as negative points. The game is won when a team reaches 10,000 points.
